Guide to Sailing the Costa Brava from Blanes
The coastline: from Blanes to Tossa de Mar
Blanes Harbour marks the beginning of the Costa Brava. Sailing north, the Sa Palomera rock gives way to a succession of turquoise coves: Cala Sant Francesc, Santa Cristina and Cala Treumal before reaching Lloret de Mar (about 25 minutes by boat), and beyond, Cala Boadella and the unspoilt coves of Tossa de Mar, with its medieval Vila Vella crowning the sea. With a licensed boat, the Blanes–Tossa route takes about 30-45 minutes of relaxed coastal sailing.
Sea conditions and winds
The southern stretch of the Costa Brava is generally comfortable to navigate in summer. In the morning the sea is usually calm; in the afternoon the garbí may pick up, the south-westerly breeze that ripples the surface slightly. The wind to watch out for is the tramontana, a strong northerly that can get up quickly: always check the marine weather forecast before heading out. Unlicensed boats navigate up to 2 nautical miles from shore (3.7 km) at a maximum of 5 knots, sufficient to explore all these coves safely.
Coves and snorkelling
The coves between Blanes and Tossa have rocky seabeds and crystal-clear waters, ideal for anchoring and snorkelling. Cala Bona, Cala Treumal and Santa Cristina offer sheltered waters; in Lloret, Cala Boadella; and towards Tossa, Cala Llevadó, Cala Giverola and Cala Pola, many accessible only by sea. Remember to anchor on sandy ground (never over the protected posidonia meadows) and let out enough rope for the anchor to hold.
Best time to sail
The sailing season runs from April to October, with departure times from 09:00 to 20:00. July and August offer the warmest and most stable sea, ideal for swimming and snorkelling; June and September are perfect for those seeking quieter coves and golden light. We do not operate outside the season. During the summer months we recommend booking in advance: boat availability and time slots are limited.
